South Suburban Recreation District: If you've been on the South Platte Greenway recently, you've noticed the new bridge north of Littleton. It connects the downstream portion of the Big Dry Creek Trail with the Greenway. They hope to begin construction on extending that trail to Broadway late this summer. That would then provide an easier link to the Highline Canal.

The Foothills P&R district is building another mile of the Dutch Creek Trail, between Wadsworth and Kipling. They hope to extend it to Simms next year, and to C470 in 2005. They have also upgraded 11 miles of their trails from asphalt to concrete. Way to go!

In Aurora, the Arapahoe P&R people are adding a mile to the Piney Creek Trail this spring, from Tower east to Greenfield. They are also replacing the low-water crossing of that creek (between Parker and the reservoir) with a box culvert bridge. Also, the city has extended the Tollgate Creek Trail from Quicny to Hampden, through Summer Valley.

A new trail in the
Farther south: Do you like riding the Santa Fe trail through the Air Force Academy? Soon you can connect to it from Douglas County! A new trail is scheduled to open in June, from Greenland town site south 4 miles to the county line, where it connects to the Santa Fe trail in Palmer Lake. Also in Douglas County, a segment of the East/West Trail, a soft-surface path south of Highlands Ranch, is open from Griggs Rd to Mtn Vista High School.

West of the metro area, Clear Creek County has opened the "Big 5" bridge on the west side of Idaho Springs, connecting to a 1-mile strip of path. It will connect to the Stanley segment, which will run to Stanley Rd. It may be paved this summer.

In Golden, the path beside US6 is 70% conmplete, from Colfax to 19th St. The Kinney Run trail now goes underneath US6, connecting with that trail then heading SE to the golf course. Also, some activity has been seen on a potential extension of the Clear Creek Trail west into Golden, but the responsible parties have not notified the city.

In the northern burbs, Thornton is tunneling the Grange Creek trail underneath Colorado Blvd, and working on Niver Creek near Huron St this summer. They also hope to start extending the Big Dry Creek Trail from I-25 to Washington St later this year.

In Louisville, the Coal Creek trail will soon be completed under US36 to the Superior Town Hall - it should open in May.

In Westminster, the Big Dry Creek trail is still closed at the base of the Standley Lake Dam. The new spillway construction is almost finished, and the trail should reopen sometime in August.
